For God and Humanity

About

The Northeastern Federation of Women’s Clubs was organized on June 3, 1896 in Boston,
Massachusetts by Mrs. Mary H. Dickerson. The organization was incorporated on June 15, 1927 at
Albany, New York. The Northeast is the oldest region in the National Association of Colored Women’s
Clubs. Mrs. Dickerson established the Women’s Newport League in 1895. She responded to the
nationwide call issued by Mrs. Josephine St. Pierre Ruffin, president of the New Era Club, to attend
a meeting in Boston, Massachusetts designed to address the assault on the character of women of
color. The meeting was held at Berkley Hall and became known as the first National Colored Women’s
Conference in America. Out of this gathering, evolved the National Federation of Women’s Clubs. Mrs.
Dickerson was elected vice president. The following year Mrs. Josephine St. Pierre Ruffin, Mrs. Agnes
Adams, Mrs. Mary H. Dickerson, Mrs. Elizabeth Carter Brooks and others organized the New England
Federation of Women’s Clubs. “For God and Humanity” was selected as their motto. The name was
eventually changed to the Northeast Federation of Women’s Clubs.

Through the years, it has been the constant aim of the Northeast Region to foster and encourage
the work of women’s club sin the Northeast along lines that tend toward lifting of humanity, raising
standards of true woman hood, and fostering higher education among women and youth.
